Following a dispute with Airbus Industrie over its A350 aircraft and an A321neo order cancellation that Airbus instigated, Qatar Airways took advantage of the opportunity to pick up a small fleet of nine 737 Max 8 aircraft. The frames were destined for a Russian carrier and had been embargoed as part of Western sanctions. The first of these aircraft was delivered in April 2023
